Comedian Al Porter could be the next host of The Late Late Show after Patrick Kielty steps back.

Kielty has signed up for a three-year deal and it is unclear if his tenure on the show will be extended.

Speculation has already started as to who would take over the show, with many looking at Porter, who would make a triumphant return to telly if he considered going for the job.

An insider said: "Al has been entertaining audiences at sell-out shows since he returned back to showbiz. He was never found guilty of anything. So why couldn’t he (host The Late Late Show).

"He’s one of Ireland’s top comedians and after six years out of the limelight, Al is proving he can still make people laugh.

"The show in Vicar Street was fantastic. He really belonged back on stage again."

Al was last on our screens when he hosted Blind Date for TV3, now Virgin Media.

But the comic was forced to step back from the spotlight after allegations of inappropriate behaviour surfaced in 2017.

Panto stage icon Twink, aka Adele Condron-King, was among the first celebrities who heaped praise on Porter following his return to entertainment.

"Cream always rises to the top... and boy was that the case last night,” she wrote to her social media followers after watching the comic perform to a sold-out Vicar Street.

"[Al was] funnier than ever, looking thin, fit and glowing with sober gold health in an impeccable suit."

Twink, who is no stranger to the stage herself, went on to talk of how Al came on to thunderous applause and "a standing ovation."

She also revealed that rather than side stepping the past few painful years, Al addressed them head on.

"He gave us over an hour of a self-effacing explanation of the past few years... referred to hilariously all night as 'The Thing' (that happened to him)."

She praised his timing, and his witty put-downs of punters walking in late and if there was any doubt over his ability to return to form, she added: "His rapid establishment as to who was boss for the next hour was obvious from the get-go.

"He is now destined for true overseas stardom, the UK will adore having him on all their shows with his intelligence, articulation and razor sharp retorts.

"I shall be watching with great delight and pride when all the wonderful things I predict for you last night come to fruition over the coming years young man."

Al said of his return to Vicar Street: "I'm so excited to have a laugh with everyone and to give everything I have, heart and soul on stage tonight.

"Years ago this would have been a big 'career' night, half-enjoying it but worrying about the next thing.

"Now I can be thankful and enjoy it for what it is - just a really great thing I get to do today. Every gig is a joy to do but tonight is special for me.

"It's a privilege to get to gig at all and to share what you love, what makes you laugh and what makes you come alive with so many people!

"I'm a work in progress, plenty of road ahead to go yet. But, thank you for tonight because real second chances are very rare in life."
