It’s been another questionable night for VAR as England somehow didn’t give away a penalty.

And then, somehow, did give away a penalty.

North Macedonia looked like they had got a certain penalty in the 23rd minute of their Euro qualifying match when Harry Maguire bundled over Elif Elmas, with some fans calling it a “rugby” tackle.

However, Filip Glova was not interested in the claims and waved the game on.

The hosts then did get a penalty before the halftime whistle as Glova was told to have another look at a headed clearance from England debutant Rico Lewis and his flailing arm was deemed to have been enough contact for a penalty as Bojan Miovski went to ground clutching his face.

Enis Bardhi converted the spot-kick to give the home side the lead before halftime.

There was more VAR drama at the beginning of the second half as Jack Grealish thought he had equalised but it took a full three minutes to overturn the goal despite the offside call looking fairly obvious from the first replay.

Jamie Carragher was not impressed as he posted on X: ‘Bizarre these VAR penalties that get given in Europe What’s more bizarre is they didn’t give the one against Maguire’

Another fan commented: ‘This England match has summed up everything wrong with VAR. They didn't even check the foul by Maguire. It was a stonewall pen. They spent ages on the Lewis foul, and got it wrong. That's never a penalty. They spent ages checking Grealish's goal, which I could see was offside from first glance.’
