Waterford legend John Mullane has picked out the one player who he thinks was the most unlucky to miss out on a hurling All-Star.

Mullane named Clare hurler Tony Kelly as the standout performer to miss out on the All-Star team.

Speaking to RTE Radio 1's Morning Ireland, Mullane said the 29-year-old had some “unbelievable” performances.

“The one big one for me is probably the omission of Tony Kelly,” he said.

“Unbelievable this year, probably better this year than he was last year when he picked up an all-star. Some unbelievable performances, you know, man of the match against Waterford, man of the match against Cork, man of the match against Dublin, a few unbelievable performances against Limerick.”

Kelly’s Clare side missed out on an All-Ireland final this year after being beaten in the semis by Kilkenny in Croke Park.

“By his standards, a low-par performance in the All-Ireland semi-final cost him getting the all-star, there was probably eight lads fighting for six positions but overall I don’t think anyone can have any arguments, I think the all-star selectors have picked a relatively good 15,” added Mullane.
