Joe Brolly has recalled taking magic mushrooms while on holiday in Amsterdam.

The All-Ireland winner was speaking on his Free State Podcast about an American pilot who has been charged with more than 80 counts of attempted murder after allegedly trying to shut down the engines of an on-flight plane in October when he made the revelation.

Joseph Emerson has since told The New York Times that he took magic mushrooms two days before the plane incident around a campfire and had never taken them before.

The 44-year-old pilot, who was off duty at the time, was sitting in a jump seat of the cockpit when he allegedly tried to shut down the plane’s engines by activating a fire suppression system.

While discussing the incident, Brolly revealed he previously took magic mushrooms on a trip to the Dutch capital.

He said: "Once myself and the glamorous brunette went to Holland, Amsterdam, and we were in one of those head shops and they were advertising mushrooms.

He continued: "They go through a whole checklist and they said here's an information sheet sir. You read through them and you think f*** me. It's sort of sobering when you look at the instruction manual and you look at the possible side effects.

"He said 'I recommend to you this very mild magic mushroom, very pleasant, and you'll laugh a lot'. But he said don't take any water with it, just have the mushrooms and if you feel things are going off track, you eat or drink something immediately and that's the end of it.

"Five minutes and nothing was happening, I wouldn't be renowned for my patience, but I'm getting better. Anyway I took more and I finished the bag."

He added: "The glamorous brunette said to me 'is there nothing happening here at all? Maybe they're just too mild'.

"Well the next thing, well hello, hello world. The carpet in the hotel started to come towards me in waves, I mean waves. It was fascinating, we were on the fifth floor so I rang down to reception.

"I said 'my good man, I have to report that the carpet is lapping at the foot of our bed, you may need to send a rescue boat'.

"They obviously get these calls all the time and he said 'we should certainly take that under advisement and if the situation worsens let us know, ring us back and we shall certainly send some emergency rescue boats'.

"She was so jealous at how I reacted, I had an ecstatic five hours. I mean it was ecstatic.

"It doesn't put any pressure on your heart, all it does is tweak your brain.

"So the next night we both had them and we went out into the street in Amsterdam and walked. I mean it was incredible. The cathedral came alive. The statues in the cathedral came alive. It was like those special effects children's movies, A Night At The Museum.

"We met Eminem's mother, who was black, but we convinced ourselves it was Mrs Eminem. We had a long conversation with her, she tried to escape.

"But the thing about it was the laughter, we laughed and laughed and laughed. You don't have a hangover, you sleep so soundly, I woke up in such peace the next morning and I'm not at all surprised to know that in many countries now they're doing a lot of experimental studies on the beneficial effects on stress, depression, manic depression of magic mushrooms so unless you're about to pilot a plane..."

On the drug policy in Amsterdam, Brolly stated: "Things are very well regulated. You can go to the nearest police officer if you feel distressed after taking anything and I think that's more liable to put people off.

"Like anything harder than that, you look at the checklist and you think 'not for me'.

"Now I will say we did share a space cake, well hello that one too.

"What happened there was after about 45 minutes, I has two glamorous brunettes. It was my first ever threesome with my wife and her identical twin.

"Everything was moving, over your shoulder you felt... I felt that I was walking behind myself and it was such a terrific sensation because your conscious that it wasn't real but it appeared so real."
