Thousands of eligible workers around Ireland are in line for a €400 boost next week as a new once-off payment is handed out.

As part of Budget 2024, the Government announced a spate of measures to help ease the burden of the cost of living as we move into winter, with multiple cash payments set to land in people’s accounts this month.

Starting in the week beginning 20 November, people who are in receipt of the Working Family Payment (WFP) will get a once-off payment of €400, as part of changes announced to the scheme in this year’s budget.

The Government also increased the income limits for the payment by €54 across all family sizes from January 2024, meaning more people are now eligible for the handy payment.

People should also be aware that if they are getting WFP, they may also be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, more information about that can be found here.

While the income limits have been extended opening up the payment to more people, there are some eligibility criteria for the weekly tax-free payment aimed at supporting people who are on low pay.

WFP is for employees with children meaning you must be a worker to get the payment, you cannot get it if you are self-employed only.

Alongside this, you must have at least one child who normally lives with you or who you support financially and your child must be under 18 or between 18 and 22 if they are in full-time day education.

Furthermore, you cannot get WFP, if you are on the Community Employment Scheme, Rural Social Scheme, or the Tús Scheme as well as Jobseeker's Benefit, Jobseeker's Allowance, Jobseeker's Transitional Payment or Farm Assist.
