Many households across Ireland are struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis, with electricity bills in particular a cause for concern.

Last month, the Government announced a €2.3 billion package, which includes giving every home in Ireland €450 off energy bills. The energy credits will be paid in three instalments of €150 in December, January and March.

With the winter months fast approaching, some people may be trying to cut costs where possible, and one way to do so is by being energy efficient in the home.

A lot of households have no idea how much they are really forking out by using appliances like showers, irons, televisions and air fryers.

With this in mind, research by Energia has revealed the 20 appliances which are costing the most on energy bills in Ireland.

Its team of experts calculated exactly how much appliances use electricity-wise, and subsequently what that would look like cost-wise per hour of usage.

The tumble dryer is often singled out as the most expensive appliance to run on electricity but this research reveals that it is only third on the list.

The findings show that a power shower was the least energy-efficient household item, followed by the immersion, and then the tumble dryer.

A power shower costs €3.33 to run for an hour - almost double the price per hour to run your immersion (€1.67). The tumble dryer costs €1.30 for an hour.

On the other end of the scale, the cost to watch a 42-inch LCD TV is just €0.04 per hour.

An average washing machine costs €0.43 an hour, the dishwasher is a little more expensive at €0.65 an hour, while mowing the grass for an hour with a plug-in mower will set you back €0.56.

The air fryer is officially the cheapest way to cook at just €0.56 an hour while a conventional oven is €0.58. A microwave is €0.65 and toaster €0.68.
